Tragically Whitney Houston was plagued with the insidious demons of addiction. How many lives must be cut short to prove that addiction and alcoholism are two progressively fatal illnesses before they are taken seriously in main-stream society? Last year we lost Amy Winehouse (another sensational soul girl). In 2009, The King of Pop, Michael Jackson overdosed and died on prescription drugs (often more lethal than street drugs and handed out like sweets by members of the medical profession). Even the King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, was a full blown addict who died far too young.
Thankfully in America and gradually in the UK, addiction and alcoholism are being accepted as a mental and physical illness. As someone who is personally in a number of 12 Step recovery programs, I know how cunning addiction is. I have a number of solid years of continuous sobriety however, I cannot afford to take my foot off the gas; NOT FOR ONE MOMENT!
When a superstar dies of cancer or a heart attack or has suffered with bulimia or anorexia, many are compassionate. However, when a HUMAN BEING is hooked on street or prescribed drugs in order to mask their inner mental and emotional suffering, they are called “a waste of life” or “weak willed.” The old saying “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” is something cynics ought to consider before passing judgement.
The way some of the media are talking about Whitney Houston in a derogative way when she has an 18 year old daughter who will be hearing these things, is callous and tasteless. Of course, most professional critics are cowards and would not have the courage to confront family members of Houston’s with their shallow remarks. It’s easy to hide behind a computer screen or behind a newspaper.
Personally, I am deeply grateful and appreciative for Whitney Houston’s life and the glorious gift she shared with us. She touched me with her sweet Goddess voice and took the 1980s and 1990s by storm. I have many happy memories associated with her songs. One thing is certain, regardless of her personal life no one can take away the joy she brought to hundreds of millions of souls all across the world. Compassion and celebration is how I will resonate with Ms Houston. R.I.P & God bless Your Soul X
